It’s officially 2020 and we are about 3 weeks in…have you completely failed at your New Year’s resolutions yet? I am a strong enneagram 3, so your girl LOVES goals, however, when it comes to New Year’s resolutions, they aren’t really my thing. I have goals all the time but for some reason, the idea of doing something for a whole year is too daunting to me, especially when it’s something vague like “be healthy”. So today I wanted to share some tips on how to live a balanced and healthy lifestyle throughout the whole year.

I joined a gym back in August, and when I first joined I was very good at going 4-5 times per week, but then the time change happened and life got busy and I just wasn’t making it as much. Given my lifestyle and schedule, my goal is to make it to the gym 2-3 times per week. My biggest tip is to be nice to yourself. If you don’t make it to the gym as much as you would have hoped or maybe you indulged in something off your “diet” be nice to yourself. Give yourself some grace and get right back to it the next day or week.
When it comes to working out I also like to “trick” my brain into working out. I prefer to go to Zumba or Hip Hop classes rather than lifting weights or runnings because dancing is much more fun to me and doesn’t even feel like a workout. Also, the class mentality keeps me accountable as well as helps me push myself, whereas if I was working out alone I don’t think I would try as hard. So, find a workout that you like to do because it will make working out so much better, even if it’s just walking your dog.

Something I also want to better at in 2020 (not a goal but a lifestyle change) is to drink more water and take more steps. My day job is a desk job and I barely move, so finding ways to sneak in steps is something I want to be more aware of. I am also addicted to soda and coffee so switching out my lunch Dr. Pepper with water is an easy lifestyle change that is achievable. For me, something simple like this is attainable but if my New Year’s resolution was to stop drinking soda I would fail in about 2 days. Consider making easy lifestyle changes instead of overwhelming goals.
One thing I have recently learned is self-care is just as important and hitting the gym. For me, I take time to paint my nails weekly. This is my time to sit alone and reflect which is much needed. I recommend taking some time out of your week to sit alone and take care of yourself, whether that’s a sheet mask, painting your nails, bubble bath or binging your favorite Netflix show. It’s so important to be mentally healthy just as much as physically healthy.
I hope these tips bring you encouragement and hopefully set you up for an awesome 2020. So forget the cheesy New Year’s resolutions and find something that works with your lifestyle.
