The most worn item in my closet…the button down. I am a button down lover! You thank my husband for that. I used to beg me to wear to button downs, and no I would say 60% of the time I’m in one.
Initially, I hated the idea of wearing button downs, it felt stuffy and too buttoned up (literally). Now, I’ve gotten to a point where they are a closet must have and I can wear them in just about any situation.
For Work
Obviously, this a no-brainer. Most people wear button down to work with a dress pant or blazer. This is a classic professional look.
For Play
When it comes to the weekends, you’ll either find me in a button down or in a ¾ length tee. A nice thin button down paired with white pants or jean shorts is perfect for casual days running errands. I’ll often times style it with a front tuck or an asymmetrical tuck for a more laid-back look. I will almost always wear them with the “J.Crew roll” which is a trendy more styled way to roll your sleeve. (read more here)
For Going Out
I don’t really have “going out” clothes. I know that may come as a shock, but you will not find crop tops or mini skirts in my closet. So when my girlfriends want to go out, I’ll often grab a white button down a tie up the front with some high waisted jeans and wedges.
For Warm Weather
Warm Weather and button downs are easy because you can wear them with pants, jeans, shorts, pretty much whatever!
For Cold Weather
Transitioning button downs for cold weather can be easy to simply throw on a puffer vest or sweater (or both) and head out the door. A button down can be a basic layering piece in the cold months.
Start with a white button down and then elevate your options from there. Pretty soon you’ll be just like me wearing them in every situation.

Ahh yes! A button down is my total go to- even for “nights out” and I always get made fun of for looking like I came from the office but it’s what makes me feel confident! Any tips for getting stains out of underarms on button downs. Gross but I wear mine so much they get worrrrn. Oops!
