Since my style is very southern and classically preppy, I would consider myself a bit of a seersucker snob. I have a lot of seersucker in my closet, especially in the summertime. There are really two types of seersuckers in my book and you can very quickly tell them apart by feel.
Before we get into the types of seersucker, my favorite way to pair a seersucker top is with linen shorts. These navy linen shorts from Duffield Lane are a summer staple because they are a dark navy that goes with everything and super lightweight because of the fabric.
Types of Seersucker
100% Cotton Seersucker
This is my preferred type of seersucker. This fabric is thicker, breathable and less prone to wrinkling. You’ll often find that this type of seersucker is unlined, but because of the quality and thickness, it isn’t see through.
One thing I love about this type of seersucker is it holds it’s shape well and is wrinkle resistant. This popover from Duffield Lane is 100% cotton seersucker, I wore it all day to work and by the end of the day it looked just as good as it did in the morning and even in a light color it’s thick enough to feel like you don’t need another layer underneath it.
With 100% cotton seersucker you can really feel the ridges within the fabric. High-end quality brands like or Duffield Lane or Draper James use this quality seersucker fabric.
Polyester Blended Seersucker
The blended seersucker is significantly thinner, often times lined and generally cheaper feeling. This type of seersucker is often times used by cheaper brands with low cost and likely high markups.
You’ll also see the second you put this type of seersucker on it wrinkles almost immediately. There is no bigger pet peeve of mine than putting something on and instantly wrinkling, I feel sloppy and not put together.
Seersucker is meant to be a breathable fabric, but when used as a blend and lined it becomes very hot and uncomfortable especially in the hot summer months of the south.
When it comes to seersucker dresses, tops, shorts, etc. I highly recommend reading the fabric makeup online or feeling it in store. You’ll want to opt for the high-quality pieces for longer durability, breathability and wrinkle resistance.
