This fall the 90’s trend is everywhere and with the 90’s trend we’re seeing sweater vests, straight-leg jeans, and claw hair clips EVERYWHERE! As a millennial some of these 90’s trends make me cringe and bring back some terrible outfit flashbacks, but some of the trends I can get on board with, however, if low rise jeans make a come back I am RUNNING! I have a very classic conservative style with a touch of preppy and a touch of trendy, so the sweater vest trend was something I wanted to dip my toe into. If you’re like me you might find some tips on how to style a sweater vest for a millennial helpful!
How To Style A Sweater Vest As A Millennial
I know as we’re moving further and further away from the younger hip generation *enter Gen Z* some of these trendy outfits can be intimidating and hard to replicate without looking cheugy (lol). But the sweater vest is quintessential preppy so I think it’s easily achievable.
So to really ease my way into this trend I grabbed a neutral color that I am very comfortable with…navy. Navy is my go-to color and I always feel confident in it. Another tip for these super trendy pieces is do NOT spend a lot of money on these items. They are going to be out by next season so don’t go crazy. This navy sweater vest I found is from Amazon for less than $30.
Next to layer the sweater vest, I picked a piece I am very comfortable with, a white button-down. Now the trendy Gen Z girls wear a massively oversized button-down, but let’s not get too crazy, we’re starting slow. I did not roll my sleeves up but you totally could if you wanted to lean into the casualness of the sweater vest.
I then grabbed my favorite light wash straight-leg jeans. I actually find the straight-leg silhouette extremely flattering and balance out the bulkiness of the vest. You could opt for skinny jeans but the proportions might look a little off.
The shoes and the bag were actually the hardest for me. I tried a sneaker, a mule, a boot, but ultimately thought the preppiness of the sweater paired nicely with a traditional loafer. I like how the blush pink also compliments the navy as well as the light wash of the denim. For the purse, again really leaning into the preppiness I opted for a quilted bag which I think ties it all together perfectly.
Lastly, no 90’s inspired look is complete without a claw clip. Personally, I’ve been LOVING the claw clip trend I probably wear my hair like this 3-4 times a week. It’s easy and looks put together and isn’t super damaging on your hair. Because of the bulkiness of layering as well as the collar I really think the hair pulled back for this look is most flattering.
What do you think of this trend and will you attempt at recreating it?
