I am a BIG believer in drugstore makeup and especially drugstore foundation. There are some hidden gems at the drugstore but the biggest challenge is finding the right shade. I wanted to share some tips and tricks I’ve found over the years on how to find your drugstore foundation shade.
How To Find Your Drugstore Foundation Shade
My biggest recommendation is to find a starting point. I typically have one shade that I’ve used in the past and work from there. I always take a picture of the foundation and shade I am using and use it as a reference in store. Personally I like to shop at Walgreens because it’s usually less crowded and has great coupons. If you aren’t using a drugstore brand bring it with you in-store and compare the shade with the in-store options.
Recently I went in-store looking for a new foundation shade because I realized my winter shade was far too light for my new “summer glow”. I normally stick within a 2-3 shade range to not go too crazy.
It’s also important to know the return policies. At Walgreens, CVS, Ulta, Target, and Walmart you can return opened makeup. If you get home and it’s not the right shade, don’t be afraid to take it back just keep your receipt! This really helps with reducing the fear of being stuck with something that doesn’t work. I once returned the same foundation 3 times until I could find the right shade.
Lastly, powder plays a big part. There is a bit of wiggle room with powder and bronzer. If it’s a little too dark a slightly lighter powder can balance this out and if it’s a little too light, bronzer will do wonders. You can also mix foundations together to have a foundation cocktail to find your perfect shade.
There are who knows how many different skin colors and only a limited selection, so the chance of finding your perfect shade right off the bat is a very low possibility.
My Favorite Drugstore Foundations
1. Wet N Wild PhotoFocus Foundation
This foundation is the best drugstore foundation for the price. I mean under $5 is amazing! It’s great coverage and stays all day. My biggest complaint is the lack of shade options. It’s a very limited range so it can be tough to find the perfect match.
2. Covergirl Outlast All-Day Stay Fabulous
This is my go-to foundation. I’ve worn this foundation on and off for the last 8 or so years. It’s medium to high coverage, lasts all day and has SPF. Also, bonus because it has a pump so it’s more sanitary.
3. Maybelline Super Stay
This foundation is full coverage and great for full glam looks where you need to cover everything. I don’t wear this every day because it can be a lot but it’s great to have in my make up bag.
4. Covergirl Outlast Active
This foundation is been my daily choice lately. It’s lightweight while still being medium coverage and has SPF. It’s great for everyday wear because it’s lightweight and easy to wear all day.
