I like to think of myself as pretty crafty but I know not everyone out there is. Crafts can be intimidating and stressful for some but my philosophy behind a DIY is “DIY means it does not have to be perfect.” Now this is something I live by when it comes to crafting. If you want it to be perfect just let the professionals do it, but if you want to save some money and don’t mind imperfections then go for it!
I moved into in a new apartment not too long ago and had been searching for the perfect piece to go above the mantle for a reasonable cost, well I couldn’t find anything for a good price to match my decor, so a DIY was the answer. I searched Pinterest for some inspiration and headed to the craft store. I wanted to keep it simple since we have a pretty large gallery wall on the adjacent wall.
I lucked out found a 3 pack of canvases for only $20 and picked up a couple 69 cent acrylic paints. So in total this DIY only cost $25 and a couple of hours. Keep reading for a step by step process.
Step 1: Gather your supplies
You will need:
- Canvas
- Acrylic Paint
- Paint Brushes or Sponge Brushes
- Masking Tape or Painters Tape
Step 2: Begin randomly/strategically taping off your canvas
I planned out where I wanted to blue and red sections and painted those first then I moved on to the all over grey color. Remember to keep a thin layer of paint by the edges to prevent bleeding under the tape lines.
Step 4: Peel off the paint – the fun part!
Tip- Wait only about 5 mins to peel off the tape. The longer you wait the more likely the paint will bleed. Also, if it is a little wet you will be correct mistakes easier then after it is completely dry.
Step 5: Find the perfect home for your new artwork
If you try this craft, I want to see how it turns out! Tag me in your DIY on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram!
I love this! This will definitely be on my to do list. One tip to keep in mind is to use a brand of tape called FROG TAPE. It will help seal down the edges a little better for you. I also try to keep to your motto about not needing to be perfect in DIY projects.
